Curse of the Mummies: Slot Overview
Curse of the Mummies is the third release in as many months from Leo Ventures (LeoVegas) owned provider Blue Guru Games, a studio that returns from outer space to more common territory to tell their latest story. This one gets straight to the point – mummies are here to get revenge on the living, full stop. The game's features are also as short, sharp and to the point. In the base game, players benefit from symbol transformations, while the bonus round potentially serves up some big multipliers, helping push Curse of the Mummies along on the way to its sizable max win.
Having so many Egyptian themed slots floating around means it can be hard for individual games to stand out and get noticed. Curse of the Mummies attempts to do so in part by representing a spookier side of the genre while stopping short of being a real horror show. An edge is provided by the creepy mummy symbols in a similar, though less shocking way as Stakelogic's thriller Gods of Death did. Curse of the Mummies might not plumb the depths of the underworld like Hacksaw Gaming's Hand of Anubis, but there's enough sensory enticement to crack on and see what happens next.
Curse of the Mummies is played on a 5x3 aligned game panel, using a 243 ways to win pay system. Players collect a prize when at least three identical symbols land in adjacent reels from the first reel onwards. It's a high volatile game with two RTP settings, the most desirable setting being a 95.73% version. It's playable on any device and exploring this tomb can be done by selecting bets of 25 p/c to $/€100 per spin.
Taking a look over the symbols reveals general Egyptian icons as the low pays, such as ankhs, lotus flowers, scorpions, and cobras, while high pays are made up of four creepy looking mummy characters. One more symbol before moving to the features is the golden scarab wild, which may be used to substitute for all symbols except scatters.
Curse of the Mummies: Slot Features
If you've played the previous Blue Guru slot, Octopus Armada, you'll be fairly familiar with the base game feature in Curse of the Mummies. It's called Rise from the Crypt and can trigger on any spin. When it comes to life, a random pay symbol is transformed into a scatter or wild.
Rise From the Crypt Free Spins
Hitting a scatter symbol on all five reels awards 15 free spins. Each triggering scatter in view builds a multiplier that is applied to all wins during the feature. Normal scatters contribute x1, x2, x3, x4, or x5 each, while super scatters are worth x10. The total is tallied up for use during the full duration of the free spins. The bonus round can be retriggered by landing 5 scatter symbols to win +5 free spins. For the retrigger, each scatter adds an additional x1, x2, x3, or x5 to the win multiplier.
Buy Bonus
If the bonus buy button is present, clicking on it gives players four options. These are:
- Option 1 costs 80x the bet and gets you are regular 5 scatter trigger.
- Option 2 costs 140x the bet and guarantees at least 1 super scatter.
- Option 3 costs 200x the bet and guarantees at least 3 super scatters.
- Option 4 costs 260x the bet and guarantees 3 super scatters.
Curse of the Mummies: Slot Verdict
After the offbeat Day of the Tentacle/Cthulhu/end of humanity thing in the previous game, it was a little surprising to see Blue Guru follow up with such a conventional theme. They have done it in style, and we're not knocking the theme or its proponents, but it's hardly the most original subject matter to spin an elaborate tapestry of a story with. Not to worry, we got evidence of Blue Guru's creative side in Octopus Armada, which was an imaginative tale of octopus overlords returning to earth to dispense cosmic justice on the reckless consumerism taking place, or something like that. Curse of the Mummies, by its nature, was always going to struggle to be as original.
As well as the backstory not being as out there as its tentacled sibling, Curse of the Mummies shares some of the same shortcomings from a gaming perspective. The base game's pretty average for one. Having 243 ways to win is a plus, though the only feature you'll find here is the transformation one, turning regular pays into wilds or scatters, which is pretty similar to what we got in Octopus Armada. The bonus game does dramatically step things up with some potentially juicy multipliers, and the feature is less fiddly than it was in The Nemean Lion. Increasing the win multiplier during the feature by landing more scatters makes hitting retriggers doubly desirable, and it means Curse of the Mummies can drum up wins as high as 9,138x the bet. It will be interesting to see it hit that, too, as a massive win would do wonders for the game and, by extension, Blue Guru's rep.
After feeling a teensy bit let down by the features in Octopus Armada, we were hoping Blue Guru really stepped it up in their next slot. They kind of have done, with the 243 ways system, rich graphics, and potential for thrilling multipliers, making Curse of the Mummies a respectable Egypt game with more pros than cons. However, there is room for improvement, and while no one is going to argue with free spins with a monstrous multiplier on board, its simplicity denies it from reaching red-hot forge of blazing creativity status. Curse of the Mummies is a polished Egypt game that shows Blue Guru is one to watch, but the team might have to dig a little bit deeper to really make the competition sweat.
Fair
While a rich contribution to the genre, it’s questionable whether Curse of the Mummies does enough to really stand out in the sandstorm of Egypt themed slots.
