Raiders of Fortune: Slot Overview
Editor’s note: It appears this game might have been cancelled.
Up for a bit of virtual raiding players? If so, come take a look at Raiders of Fortune, an online slot from software outfit Light & Wonder. If the name Raiders of Fortune sounds a little bit like Raiders of the Lost Ark, it might not be a major coincidence since the main character in this game looks a lot like adventurer-archaeologist Indiana Jones. Well, Indiana Jones with a bit of Crocodile Dundee thrown in. Anyhoo, strap up, load up, do whatever you have to do to brace for some forest-themed action, and let’s see what sort of fortune Light & Wonder had in mind when it made Raiders of Fortune.
The first thing to know is Raiders of Fortune follows in the footsteps of Cluedo Mightyways, so there are some similarities between the two games. In practice, there are a lot more differences than similarities, but one crossover is the Trailways Trail sitting next to the reel-set, which players can win things from depending on how many consecutive cascading wins take place. The rest of the view isn’t bad; pretty stock, where temple-like structures sit in the background, and a waterfall cascades on the right. It’s a decent scene, nothing hugely special or unique for this particular slot category, though the tiki-esque face at the top of the Trailways Trail looks a little out of place.
Raiders of Fortune’s action starts on a 6-reel, 4-row game board with 40 fixed paylines, which can grow when reaching the right spot on the Trailways Trail. The RTP comes in three possible forms, from a high of 96% to a low of 92%, while the math model runs medium-high volatile. When ready to set a bet, the options range from 40 p/c to $/€20 per spin, which might make the game a bit unfriendly for some of the low rollers.
Wins occur when three to six matching symbols land from the leftmost reel on adjacent reels across a payline. Symbols start with 10-A card royals worth 3-5x the bet for six of a kind, increasing to 8 to 20x the bet for landing five premium guns, maps, watches, adventurers, or amulets. Wild symbols appear on the reels to replace any normal pay symbol to help complete winning lines.
Raiders of Fortune: Slot Features
Cascading wins are the launching pad for the bulk of the features in Raiders of Fortune, if not all of them. When a winning line hits, the payout is calculated then all of the symbols in the win are removed from the grid. New symbols cascade to fill the gaps, and if a new win is formed, the cascade feature triggers again. When no new wins are created, the total prize amount is paid.
Trailways
Sitting next to the reels is the Trailways Trail displaying a list of prizes or modifiers, which players move along following winning cascades. When no more cascades occur, the Trail and the grid are reset. Positions on the Trail award:
- Position 1 – 1 Wild: 1 wild is added to the reels.
- Position 2 – 3x Wild: 3 wilds are randomly added to the reels.
- Position 3 – Free Expand: two rows are added to the grid, and win lines increase to 60.
- Position 4 – Colossal Wild: a 2×2 or 3×3 sized wild is randomly added to the grid.
- Position 5 – 5x + 1 Wild: an x5 multiplier is applied to all wins and one wild symbol is randomly added to the reels.
- Position 6 – Random Wilds: between 2 and 5 wilds are randomly added to the grid.
- Position 7 – 7 Free Games: 7 free spins are triggered, plus 1 free spin for each further cascade.
Free Games
During free games, the awards on the Trailways Trails continue to be activated by consecutive cascades, but the positions now offer:
- Position 1 – 3 Wilds: 3 wilds are randomly added to the reels.
- Position 2 – +1x +1 Wild: the win multiplier increases by 1, and 1 wild is randomly added to the reels.
- Position 3 – 6×6 +1 Wild: two rows are added to the grid, win lines increase to 60, and one wild is randomly placed on the reels.
- Position 4 – Colossal Wild: a 2×2 or 3×3 sized wild is randomly added to the grid. One wild is randomly added to the reels.
- Position 5 – +3x: the win multiplier is increased by +3.
- Position 6 – Random Wilds: between 2 and 5 wilds are randomly added to the grid.
- Position 7 – +2 Spins +1x: 2 free spins are awarded, and the win multiplier increases by +1.
Any cascades beyond 7 each award an additional 1 free spin and increase the win multiplier by +1. Between free spins, the Trail and the grid size are reset.
Raiders of Fortune: Slot Verdict
Suffice to say, if you like the idea of cascades not only leading to repeat wins but triggering a different modifier each time they progress along a Trail, there might be value in Raiders of Fortune to be had. While Raiders of Fortune might be built on the back of Cluedo Mightyways, it’s been set-up to operate quite differently and might appeal to players who possibly aren’t as patient as those who would prefer the Cluedo Mightyways game.
The reason being is the modifiers on the Trail start being slung from the very first cascade win. Sure, it’s just a wild symbol to start with, likely not game-changing, perhaps, but players don’t have to wait until the fifth cascade like they did in Cluedo Mightyways to start getting stuff. Raiders of Fortune is the ‘smaller’ game, for want of a better word, in many regards. For starters, the game grid doesn’t reach anywhere the size it could in the previous game – 60 max ways to win compared to 262,144 is one such example. Potential, too, is like night and day, Raiders of Fortune coming in at a much more down-to-earth figure of 4,493x the bet, compared to the other’s 50,000x (which we are yet to see proof of).
To sum up, Raiders of Fortune takes the Trailways Trail/cascade combo idea in a new direction, loosening it up, technically making it easier to win stuff from. Players who would prefer prizes or modifiers to appear rather often might find joy in it. Other than that, the theme’s a bit hackneyed, if nicely presented, and the final destination isn’t overly impressive, making Raiders of Fortune closer to a trek in a city park than a machete hack through thick bush.
