Tropicool 2: Slot Overview

As far as holiday destinations go, catching some rays in an Antarctic area probably isn't high up on too many bucket lists. Sure, the icy regions of the earth offer a majestic beauty of their own, but they aren't exactly renowned as a place to chill out and work on your tan. At least, they're not in real life. In the imaginative world of ELK Studios' previous slot Tropicool, this is where bird folk Tony Toucan and Fiona Flamingo set up shop, forging quite an inviting spot. This time, they've joined by a new character called Elmo the Sloth and have brought with them a jazzed set of features while pumping up the potential in the process.

Tropicool 2's spot is just as inviting as before. If anything, it looks warmer than ever, with the foreground displaying the sort of charming thatch bar by the beach you might find on a tropical island getaway. The ice cubes of the game grid and the iceberg in the background remind players of the previous game's chillier surroundings, though. Tony and Fiona look as dapper and amiable hosts as ever, helping create a positive mood about what sort of activities the pair have planned.

Tropicool 2 slot - base game

Tropicool 2's gaming area has a regular reel set in the lower region and what's known as the Cool Reel above it. Winning combinations are created when at least three matching symbols land on consecutive reels from the leftmost side and are removed by the avalanche mechanic. Symbols from the Cool Reel drop down first, and any left-over spaces are filled with symbols on the main grid. The Cool Reel is refilled with symbols coming in from the right. This avalanche sequence repeats until no new win is created.

This Tropicool 2 does in a highly volatile manner on a 6x6, 46,656 ways to win grid, producing a theoretical return value of 94%. Where possible, the game may be played in two ways – regularly, wagering 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin, or by activating the X-iter bonus buys. For symbols, the lower-value regulars are purple, green, orange, and red berries, then come watermelons, limes, pineapples, coconuts, and strawberries, all encased in ice. The first four pay 0.25x the bet for six of a kind or 0.3-3x the bet for the others. Tony and Fiona symbols also pay, but they scatter pay from anywhere as long as at least three of a kind are in view. Their values are multiped, depending on the symbols' size. The bigger the bird symbol, the bigger their multiplier.

Tropicool 2: Slot Features

Tropicool 2 slot - free spins

The original Tropicool slot was an active game already, yet the sequel manages to push the mayhem further. Included in the bag of extras are the Cool Reel, Elmo Redrops, Big Symbols, a Free Drops Bonus Game, and X-iter buy options.

Cool Reel

In Tropicool 2, the Cool Reel has 3 rows and contains feature symbols, empty ice cubes, and empty cells. As noted above, when the avalanche mechanic makes way on the main reels, feature symbols are able to drop down to the main reels, activating their abilities:

  • Wild – substitutes for all paying symbols except bird symbols.
  • Locked Wild – a wild symbol that lasts for 3 wins.
  • Mystery – at the end of a drop, Mystery Symbols reveal the same pay symbol type.
  • Row Swap – one symbol type replaces all others on the row except for wilds, bonuses, or Elmos. A bunch of other technicalities cover what Row Swaps do, found on the pay table.

Elmo Redrops

When Elmo drops down from the Cool Reel, he is active when in his 1x2 size. Elmos can land in 1x1 size, then later grow to 1x2 if a space opens up. When active, Elmo scares bird symbols, replacing them with wilds or locked wilds and triggering Elmo Redrops. Locked wilds or bonus symbols remain during redrops while all else is cleared. Elmo walks one reel to the left on each redrop until leaving by way of the rightmost reel.

Big Symbols

Any pay or feature symbols except Elmo, bonus or birds may appear as a 2x2 or 3x3 big symbol. Big symbols pay as the number of 1x1 positions they cover. If a big symbol drops from the Cool Reel, it crushes paying symbols until it rests at the bottom of the grid. However, feature symbols and big symbols cannot be crushed. If a big symbol cannot fit into a space on the main reels, it breaks into 1x1 symbols to plug any gaps. Also, big symbols which cannot drop onto the main reels but have spaces beneath them fill the gaps with 1x1 size tiles of the same type.

Free Drops

Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 bonus symbols in the main area awards 6, 9, 12, or 15 free drops. Now, two symbols are added to the Cool Reel in the bonus round. One is Extra Drops, awarding 1,2 or 3 free drops when activated; the other is Multipliers which increase the round's win multiplier by +1, +2 or +3. Locked wilds remain on the grid between drops.

X-iter

Hitting the X-iter button switches the game into X-iter mode. From the menu, players can choose these options:

  • Big Blocks – 10x the bet buys a game round with a big symbol on the Cool Reel and main reels.
  • Turbo Spins – 25x the buys 25 faster-played spins.
  • Elmo – 50x the bet buys a game round with guaranteed Elmo Redrops.
  • Buy Bonus – 100x the bet buys the Bonus game.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet gets you the Bonus game with a starting multiplier of x10.

Tropicool 2: Slot Verdict

If there is one thing ELK Studios excels at, it's making a good sequel. Time and time again, the studio has revisited prior games, be they hits or not, and has set to work expanding the daylights out of them. So many examples to mention here. Examples include Kane and the Gold range, Nitropolis 2, Nitropolis 3 or Nitropolis 4, as well as some of the studios' 'Classic' range of slots. Tropicool 2 can proudly hold its head up high amongst practically any of these games, being a hugely entertaining slot when the going's good.

It won't always be going swimmingly, of course, and the comparably low RTP is a thorn in its side. The X-iter bonus buys proved to be thrilling; well, maybe not the 25-spin Turbo run option, as that one felt a little bit like filler. But the rest were a great way of sampling what Tropicool 2 could do. What it can do is deliver features which can scintillate on their own at times but are able to really up the fun stakes when working in conjunction with each other. So many examples here, too. From the row swap swamping the reels with matching symbols, the multiplier, the Cool Reel dropping in all sorts of handy ordinance, Elmo, who is random in a good way, shoving wilds onto the grid, and so on and so forth. A real firecracker of events that kind of felt like playing one of the better Gold slots, though without the growing reels dynamic. Potential is on the big side, too, with Tropicool 2 keeping a lid on things getting too crazy with a 25,000x the bet win cap.

In all, there is definitely a chance of scoring some exhilarating times here if you're lucky enough to experience Tropicool 2 when it's going off. It's a step up from the original Tropicool in a few ways, which is always nice to see in a sequel and should thrill players into ELK Studio's particular brand of entertainment. Arguably, the main bugbear is Tropicool 2's 94% RTP which kinda sucks, but hey, it's ELK Studios; other than boycott the game because of it, what can you do?

Good

Though it’s not without flaws, Tropicool 2 turns up the heat to be a fuller game than its predecessor.
